This booklet is a small collection of our favorite open tasks. It has been compiled over many years of teaching, and all tasks have been tested multiple times in class. They can serve as an introduction to a new topic, as a supplement for talented students, or simply to add some variety to lessons.
It is worth taking a closer look at the term "open tasks." All the tasks in this booklet do not have a single correct answer—different solutions are possible. This task format is wonderful because it accommodates all levels of ability, allowing each student to work at their own pace and according to their level of knowledge. Of course, this means that reviewing and discussing the results must be approached differently than with traditional tasks. It is important to take enough time for this process. The way these tasks are used will depend on the context—whether they are being worked on by an individual student or in a group/class setting.
One important aspect is that the student working on an open task should also present their work. What were their thoughts? What was their intention? By doing so, they take on the role of a "teacher" and "lecturer." In an appreciative learning environment, the audience can provide constructive feedback. The task can then be expanded or modified accordingly. An open culture of learning from mistakes is essential. We strongly recommend that feedback always begins with positive aspects—praise before criticism—but technical errors should, of course, be noted so they can be improved.
Over the past 15 years, we have had many valuable experiences and great lessons using open tasks. We encourage everyone to create their own tasks—anyone can do it! Children, in particular, come up with fantastic ideas and often develop their own versions or take the tasks in this collection to a new level.
Open tasks can also be shared among students in a group or class. Children enjoy assigning tasks to each other—this can be done randomly, through a draw, or based on seating arrangements. Be creative!
We also encourage you to collect your own tasks and share them with others. That is the true goal of this workbook—to inspire a different way of thinking and working, beyond just going through "materials and notebooks."
We hope you all enjoy this collection!
Kind regards,
Lisa and Nils Lemke
